Thomas Gray v Linacre 21.3.17

Tuesday 21st March 2017

Thomas Gray  V  Linacre

From the kick-off there was an early goal by Thomas Gray, swiftly followed by another, 0-2.  Ellis Browne got involved clearing a dangerous ball.  Thomas Gray threatened again and scored, 3-0.  Ellis Browne was called on again to stand strong in defence. KS tried to get involved in midfield. A speculative shot by their striker, who was everywhere, hit the bar but went in, 4-0.  Linacre were like a boxer on the ropes, they didn’t know what had hit them.  Undaunted, Ellis Browne and Evie Duff then combined well, covering each other.  Evie Duff produced a great block on a shot from the striker, before bringing the ball out of defence.  Campbell James and Thomas Dobbin realised they needed to support in midfield, Thomas produced a headed clearance for a corner.  Steven Snow, in goal, gathered a difficult bobbling ball, smothering it with his body, foiling the Thomas Gray attack.  He was called on to make a super save.  Thomas Dobbin did a good job putting the striker off by forcing him wide, but not for long, 5-0.  Campbell James was chasing down every ball he could.  Steven Snow was beginning to make a nuisance of himself in goal, and produced another super save, followed by another from a full, hard shot, and another.  Evie Duff was making her presence felt in defence, standing strong in the face of an unrelenting attack force.

H-T:  5-0

Linacre made a lively start to the second half, having a period of possession, with KS trying to make an impression on the game.  Evie Duff made a super clearance out of defence with a super pass.  Thomas Gray mounted an attack, with their striker getting round our defence and Steven Snow doing his best to put him off by making himself ‘big’ and coming off his line to narrow the angle.  Goal kick out to KS who showed a glimpse of her fancy footwork, when she went past 2 of the opposition.  Thomas Dobbin and Evie Duff combined well to foil another attack.  A move down the right resulted in goal, 6-0.  Campbell James made himself busy in midfield.    Another goal followed shortly, 7-0.  To their credit, the team never gave up with everyone fighting for every ball.   Charlie Guy had a rare opportunity to take the ball up field.  Evie Duff was chasing after every ball in defence and blocked a shot that would have been another certain goal.  Steven Snow came out again to meet another attacker, diving on the loose ball.  Evie Duff blocked another shot.  KS nearly put Charlie Guy through.  Play went up the other end, 8-0, followed swiftly by another, 9-0.  Still not surrendering, Evie Duff again with a great challenge, super save from Steven Snow, with Evie Duff once more getting involved.  A final goal, 10-0.

F-T:  10-0

MOM – Evie Duff

Despite the score line, this was a gritty performance by the team.  Their ‘never say die’ spirit was commendable and needed to be recognised.  We played with determination and a respect for the game.  Well done everyone.

Special thanks to the travelling faithful, your support is so important.  Thanks to Neil for preparing the team.
